  • model of a Bingham plastic fluid
         (visco-plastic fluid)
  • two distinct zones in the flow: in the shear flow, the shear stress exceeds the yield stress, and the velocity varies in z; in the plug flow, the stress is smaller than the yield stress, and the horizontal velocity must be uniform in z

Notes:

Fig. a Usually three basic physical models are used, to simulate submarine landslide inducing surface water waves. The first is a rigid-body model, when a landslide is considered as a solid body, then a viscous model where a slide is considered as a heavy Newtonian fluid, and third a visco-plastic model when a landslide is considered as a Bingham plastic fluid.

Fig. b This shows dependence of shear stress on shear rate for heavy Newtonian fluid and Bingham plastic fluid.
